Redact a PDF Properly (Not Just Black Boxes)

The most dangerous mistake in document handling: drawing a black box over a name or number and assuming it’s gone. In many PDFs, the text is still there underneath — copy-paste or “extract text” reveals it. Newsworthy leaks have happened exactly this way.

Cover vs. true redaction

• Visual cover — a black rectangle drawn on top. Looks redacted, but the underlying text/vectors still exist in the file. Not secure. Fine only for a quick visual mock-up.
• True redaction — the content itself is removed so nothing remains to recover. This is what you need for anything real (PII, financials, legal).

A tool should state plainly which one it does. If it doesn’t say “removed”, assume it’s only a cover.

How to redact a PDF step by step

1. Open Redact PDF and select the file.
2. Mark the areas to redact (drag rectangles over each).
3. Choose true/rasterized redaction so the affected content is actually removed, not just hidden.
4. Download — then verify: try to select/copy where the redaction is. Nothing should be selectable.

Tips

• Always verify by attempting to copy text from the redacted area.
• Check metadata and other pages — sensitive data hides in document properties and repeated headers too.
• For whole pages, delete the page entirely instead of redacting.

Why does true redaction rasterize the page? Flattening the affected page to an image guarantees the original text/vectors are gone — the trade-off is that page becomes non-selectable, which is the correct, safe outcome.
